The Polar Bears and The Northern Lights.
by Inna Race
I am a City Girl: art, architecture, dining and parties are my thing. And this is what I look for, when I travel. While I enjoy my quiet moments of meditation and nature walks, camping, hiking, and fishing are not among my list of favorite things to do.
The idea of visiting Alaska was more like childhood dream: I remember watching cartoons that would beautifully depict a polar bear sitting atop a clear, shiny glacier and watching the glimmering stars in a completely pristine sky… Then the Northern Lights would appear, reflecting in the white snow and blue ocean water…
I have plenty of friends, who are travelers; all of them told me that Alaska was one of their most beautiful memories…
I have been looking forward to this “nature walk” for almost a year and finally made it!
What a bummer that on our first day in Ketchikan, the sky was gray, and the rain would not stop. Small local bars and art shops kept us dry and entertained at Icy Strait Point for another gloomy day. Fishman boats and little houses were not what I planned to see during my vacation… The tour guide’s remarks that, “It’s a rain forest, after all!” did not make it any better.
Only when in Juneau could we go without our umbrellas, hats and warm coats; and so in a better mood, we went on the flight of a lifetime: A small airplane with the funny name “Porcupine” took us on a journey of incredible views and showed what Alaska is all about. If you ever have the chance to go, this is the tour you definitely should splurge on. What a beauty! Breathtaking! The colors of Alaska are something that I, as an artist, was astounded by. True, glaciers are not as shiny and clear as they appear in cartoons, and there are no polar bears walking around, but the boat ride at Seward showed us many more unforgettable moments of wild Alaska. It began with beautiful jellyfish surrounding our boat, then it was Eagles, sea lions, dolphins, whales… What can I say? The scenery is truly one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
I am so happy to be able to add it to my travel collection! I wish that one day you would have the chance to do the same.
